From 'At that time the World-Honoured One was surrounded by the four assemblies' down to the end of the chapter is the second part, designated the specific preface. It directly clarifies the meaning that various sūtras are each distinct and each collection is different, fully as explained before. Furthermore, there are five aspects of the specific preface, also as explained before: first, the assembly gathering; second, auspicious omens; third, doubtful thoughts; fourth, raising questions; fifth, answering questions. Now, each of these five specific prefaces is opened into two. Within the preface of the assembly gathering, the two are: first, directly clarifying the assembly gathering; second, from 'offered, revered' downward, narrating the comportment and suitability of the gathered assembly. What is now called 'surrounded by the four assemblies' is the first, directly clarifying the assembly gathering. Although there are the eight classes of devas and dragons, they do not exceed four categories, namely the four renunciant assemblies. 'Offered, revered': from this point down is the second, narrating the comportment and suitability of the gathered assembly; within this, there is the general and the specific. First, saying 'offered' is general; below, it specifically brings out the offerings of the three karmas: 'revered' is bodily karma, 'respected' is mental karma, and 'praised' is verbal karma. Verbally, they extol the sage's virtues; in the mental ground, they respect the Tathāgata; bodily, they revere the Buddha. These phrases are all the words of the compiler of the sūtra.
