The questioner asks: "One should only enter the Lotus Samādhi; why enter the Samādhi of Immeasurable Meanings?" The commentator answers: "If he had entered the Lotus Samādhi, how could there be a prologue to the Lotus Sūtra? As for the 'Place of Immeasurable Meanings,' the Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings clarifies that myriad goods attain Buddhahood, and the Buddha-fruit is the place to which immeasurable meanings return. Furthermore, it clarifies that because the Tathāgata was about to expound the meaning of the Lotus, he therefore first entered the Samādhi of Immeasurable Meanings. Signifying that he must expound the Lotus Sūtra is the meaning of the sign; secretly intimating it to the assembly of that time is the portent."
