"Kaphina" is also a foreign word, translated here as "lodging in the quarters". It precisely means that this person lodged in the monastic quarters. The Tathāgata, knowing that his faculties were mature, transformed into an old monk and lodged together with him, and on that very night converted him, causing him to attain the path; hence he is called "lodging in the quarters". Another explanation says: "This person was a native of the country of Kaphina, and took his name from the country." The former explanation is certain, while the latter is not necessarily so.
