"Anuruddha" is also a foreign phonetic rendering. Translated here: "a-" means non-, and "-ruddha" means poor, signifying the "non-poor monk". It was not that this arhat accumulated much wealth and treasure, but merely that wherever he went, his clothing, food, and drink, and all matters he engaged with, surpassed those of other people. In the past, across five hundred lifetimes, this person widely practiced giving to relieve the impoverished; now, because the residual retribution has not yet run out, he is called "non-poor".
