"Subhūti" is translated as "Good and Auspicious". This clarifies that this person possessed virtue and constantly benefited others with auspicious matters. The reason for this is that in the past, he gave rise to thoughts of resentment and jealousy toward the field of merit, and consequently drifted endlessly through the hells, enduring suffering. Now he made a vow never to afflict others. For this reason the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "If there are sentient beings who dislike my sitting, I will stand all my life without moving from the spot; the same applies to walking and lying down." He vowed that whatever he did would bring auspiciousness to beings.
