"Ānanda" is translated as "Unstained". This person was handsome and lovable, constantly following the Tathāgata among humans and in heaven, beholding the forms of the five sense objects and seeing delightful scenes; yet he constantly sought to benefit beings, free from thoughts of lustful attachment. Furthermore, he attained the fruit of a stream-enterer (srotāpanna) and was foremost in broad retention (dhāraṇī).
