「說大乘經名妙法蓮華」，此下是第二明說經名字應同。就此自有三階者：第一言「說大乘經」一句，出經下理；第二名「妙法蓮華」，此一句正明經名字同，昔日如來出定即說《法華》，今日如來出定亦應說《法華》也；第三言「教菩薩法佛所護念」，此出所為之意，意為大乘人，即說第一句也。

"Expounded the Mahāyāna sūtra named Saddharmapuṇḍarīka": from here downward is the second [point], which clarifies that the name of the expounded sūtra should be identical. Within this there are itself three steps: first, the single phrase 'expounded the Mahāyāna sūtra' sets forth the principle underlying the sūtra; second, 'named Saddharmapuṇḍarīka'—this single phrase directly clarifies the identity of the name of the sūtra: in the past, when the Tathāgata arose from samādhi he immediately expounded the Lotus [Sūtra], and today, when the Tathāgata arises from samādhi he should likewise expound the Lotus [Sūtra]; third, the statement 'a dharma for instructing bodhisattvas, which the Buddhas protect and keep in mind' sets forth the purpose for which it was done: the intention was for the sake of Mahāyāna persons, which immediately speaks of the first phrase.
