"In past incalculable kalpas": from here downward there are twenty-seven and a half stanzas, [versifying] the second, the gate of the past Buddhas, among the four gates of the Buddhas above. Within the gate of the past Buddhas above there were originally two parts: first, unfolding the three; second, revealing the One. Now, there are first two stanzas that verse unfolding the three; second, from "All these World-Honoured Ones" there are twenty-five and a half stanzas versifying the past Buddhas' revealing the One. Within these second twenty-five and a half stanzas there are naturally two types: first, there are two and a half stanzas versifying oneness of teaching; second, the twenty-three stanzas from "If there are kinds of sentient beings" form three tiers and concurrently verse the three onenesses: oneness of person, oneness of cause, and oneness of fruition. As for the three tiers: the first two stanzas explain cultivating practice and attaining buddhahood while the past Buddhas were in the world; the second, twenty stanzas, concern cultivating practice and attaining buddhahood after the past Buddhas passed into extinction; the third, one stanza, jointly explains making offerings and attaining buddhahood both while the Buddhas were in the world and after their extinction. Within the first two stanzas on cultivating practice and attaining buddhahood while the past Buddhas were in the world, there are also three: "If there are kinds of sentient beings" is oneness of person; practicing the six perfections is oneness of cause; attaining the Buddha-path is oneness of fruition. The twenty stanzas from "After the Buddhas passed into extinction" downward are the second [tier], concerning cultivating practice and attaining buddhahood after the Buddhas passed into extinction, which in all comprise four kinds of offerings: each single stanza clarifies the offering of a pliant and wholesome [mind]; the second, four and a half stanzas, clarifies the offering of raising stūpas; the third, six and a half stanzas, clarifies the offering of making images; the fourth, eight stanzas, directly clarifies the offering with the three karmas. First, this one stanza "If a person with a wholesome and pliant mind" has not yet had leisure to make other offerings, but first clarifies the pliant and wholesome mind; this offering is not subdivided. "After the Buddhas passed into extinction" has four and a half stanzas, the second, the offering of raising stūpas, which also has the three onenesses: the person is oneness of person, the mind of offering is oneness of cause, and attaining the Buddha-path is oneness of fruition. The six and a half stanzas from "If a person, for the sake of the Buddha" are the third, clarifying the offering of making images, which also has the meaning of the three onenesses. The eight stanzas from "If a person in a stūpa or temple" downward are the fourth, directly clarifying offerings through the three karmas and the like, which also admit the meaning of the three onenesses. The one stanza below, "Toward all past Buddhas, present or passed into extinction," is the third, jointly clarifying cultivating practice while the Buddhas were in the world and after extinction, which also admits the meaning of the three onenesses.
