The questioner further asks: 'If you say it was lost, how does it arise again now?' The commentator explains: 'This loss is not a permanent severing of wholesome roots to become an icchantika. It only means that because afflictions and the five turbidities were numerous, at that time the mind of understanding was not manifest; this is called "loss". Now, the arising of wholesome [qualities] must take the mind of faith as its foundation; at that time, although they lost the great understanding, because they still had the mind of faith and cultivated within the teachings of the five precepts and ten virtues, they were able to keep the wholesome roots of the Great Vehicle's wisdom and vows from being severed. For this reason [the Buddha says]: "In the past I taught you to resolve upon and aspire to the Buddha-path. Now you have completely forgotten it. I now wish again to cause you to recollect the path practiced according to your original vow." Therefore, if one says it was permanently severed, how could he speak of recollecting it?'
