「而我等不知真是佛子」此一句，即合上第七見子志大譬。上言「復經少時父知子心漸已通泰成就大志自鄙先心」有三，今唯合第二。所以言「我等不知真是佛子」者，我等于時有大乘機發，唯如來知，然我等逕竟自不知。舉我不知形出如來知，故言不知真是佛子也。

"Yet we did not know that we were truly the Buddha's sons"—this single line matches the seventh parable above, of seeing the son's great aspiration. Above it said, "After another short time, the father knew the son's mind had gradually become broad and relaxed, achieving a great aspiration and despising his former mind"; there were three [points], and now it only matches the second. The reason it says "we did not know that we were truly the Buddha's sons" is that at that time our capacity for the Great Vehicle was stirred; only the Tathāgata knew it, yet throughout we ourselves did not know it. Citing our lack of knowledge brings into contrast the Tathāgata's knowledge; therefore it says we did not know that we were truly the Buddha's sons.
