From "attaining what had never been before" below, this is the second, directly narrating the marks of his attaining understanding, which also has four stages: first, narrating that because he attained understanding, his mind rejoiced within; second, from "he immediately arose from his seat" below, the compiler of the sūtra narrates that because he attained understanding, his external form was respectful; third, from "and had this thought" below, the compiler of the sūtra narrates that because Pūrṇa attained understanding, he recollected the Buddha's virtues; fourth, the statement, "Only the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, can know our deep-seated mind's original vow", clarifies that the compiler of the sūtra narrates that because Pūrṇa attained understanding, he silently felt gratitude toward the Tathāgata. The "deep-seated mind's original vow" refers to the vow for all-knowledge at the time of the sixteen princes.
