Next, explaining the third practice: this practice takes departure from evil as its substance and has two sections, which are the two sections of the prose and the verse. Now, regarding the prose, within it there are themselves three sections: First, directly explaining departure from evil; second, from "Toward all sentient beings..." downward, explaining the cultivation of good, for if one does not cultivate good there is no way to depart from evil; third, from "Mañjuśrī..." downward, explaining the marks of the ease and comfort of attaining the fruit. Now, within the explanation of departure from evil, one departs from six kinds of evil in all: 1. "jealousy"; 2. "flattery"—this person can actually cultivate good, yet merely ingratiates himself with others' feelings; 3. "deceit"—in this person's mind there is no actual practice; 4. "also do not disparage or revile those who study the Buddha path"; 5. from "If monks and nuns..." downward, five lines are not disparaging those who study the Small Vehicle; 6. "moreover, one should also not engage in frivolous talk about dharmas so as to have disputes."
