8.58

問者言：「昔日三乘中，菩薩以自發廣化之心起遠求之意，若爾今昔何殊耶？」解釋者言：「昔日菩薩止言斷除正使及習氣仍得究竟，今日方便更明險難遠長應去應度，是則昔日自行、化他兩行不成，今日自行、化他兩行成就，不可用昔之短狹，類今日之廣長也。」

A questioner says: 'Formerly in the three vehicles, bodhisattvas had already generated a mind of broadly transforming [others] and given rise to the intention of seeking afar. If so, what difference is there between now and formerly?' The explicator says: 'Formerly, bodhisattvas merely spoke of severing the active propensities and habitual residues to then attain the ultimate. Today, by expedient means, it is further clarified that the perils and dangers are distant and long, and should be traversed and crossed. Thus formerly, the two practices of personal practice and transforming others were not accomplished; today, the two practices of personal practice and transforming others are accomplished. One cannot use the short and narrow of the past to compare with the vast and long of today.'
