"Safely and peacefully escape" clarifies that the Tathāgata in the past personally relied on the teaching of the Great Vehicle, left behind the three realms and the eight sufferings, and perfected omniscient awakening; hence it says "safely and peacefully escape." "Yet the sons" downwards is the third [part], introducing the persons for whose sake he was frightened. Sentient beings greedily crave and defile themselves with the five sense objects, hence they are said to "delight in and cling to." All day long they employ the three modes of karma without a single deed worthy of record, hence they are said to "play." They are not aware that the five turbidities and the eight sufferings oppress them. If they were made aware that the ninety-eight propensities are harms, they would fear the suffering of the three miserable paths; it is solely because they are not aware that they do not know, and are neither alarmed nor frightened.
