As for the secret indeterminate, its meaning is not thus. The Tathāgata achieves supreme sovereignty over the Dharma: in wisdom, spiritual capacity, time, and place, across the three mysteries and four gates, there is no impediment or hindrance. In this assembly he expounds the sudden, while in the ten directions he expounds the gradual or the indeterminate. Those in the assembly of the sudden do not hear the ten directions, and the ten directions do not hear the assembly of the sudden. Or, in the ten directions he expounds the sudden or the indeterminate, while in this assembly he expounds the gradual. Neither knows or hears the other: to these it is manifest, to those it is secret. Or he expounds the sudden for one person, while for many he expounds the gradual or the indeterminate; or he expounds the gradual for one person, while for many he expounds the sudden. Neither knows of the other, being mutually manifest and secret. Or in one assembly he is silent while in the ten directions he speaks; in the ten directions he is silent while in one assembly he speaks. Or in both they are silent, or in both they speak. Neither knows of the other, being mutually manifest and secret. Although this is so, it still does not exhaust the Tathāgata's power of sovereignty over the Dharma. It can only be known by wisdom; it cannot be differentiated in speech. Although these are exceedingly numerous, they do not go beyond the gradual, the sudden, the indeterminate, and the secret.
