The differentiation as stated above is solely from the perspective of the manifest, clarifying the characteristics of the gradual and sudden and the five flavors. If we discuss the indeterminate, the principle is not so. Although it is a sudden exposition on the high mountain, without stirring from the quiet site of enlightenment he roams and transforms the Deer Park; although he preaches the arising and cessation of the four noble truths, this does not impede non-arising and non-cessation; although he preaches the Buddha's realm for bodhisattvas, there is the wisdom and severance of the two vehicles; although the five persons realize the fruit, this does not impede eighty thousand devas from attaining the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas. One should know that the sudden is precisely the gradual, and the gradual is precisely the sudden. The Great Sūtra states: "At times I preach what is deep; at times I preach what is shallow." Where one should ask, he refrains; where one should refrain, he asks. Within a single moment, a single exposition, a single thought-moment, the indeterminate is fully present. This is not like the old views that exclusively classified an entire text. It is entirely like this within each and every flavor; this is the manifest indeterminate.
