Second, it is like a skilled physician who has a secret recipe containing twelve medicines, three of which are the most precious; skillfully discerning the symptoms of the disease, adjusting and dosing what is appropriate, he never goes against the proper seasons or mistakenly treats anything. The Buddha is also like this: his marvelous cure of the perfect prescription contains the twelve divisions; the unasked discourses and extensive predictions are the most profound. Bodhisattvas of keen wisdom take the complete dose in full; for the severe illness of the two vehicles, nine are used as the prescription. If this were not reduced, it would bring no benefit to the illness. Where unreduced, it is milk; where reduced, it is curd. This uses the sequential arising as an analogy, not the richness, thinness, shallowness, or depth.
