Third, regarding the practitioner's mind: when the Avataṃsaka was preached, the view and thought [afflictions] of ordinary beings were not transformed, hence it is said to be like milk. When the Tripiṭaka was preached, the afflictions of view and thought were severed, hence it is said to be like curd. Arriving at the Vaipulya, they were humbled and made ashamed and submissive, but it had not yet spoken of the true ultimate, hence it was like raw butter. Arriving at Prajñā, they managed the teaching and recognized the dharmas, like ripened butter. Arriving at the Lotus Sūtra, ignorance was shattered, the Buddha's knowledge and vision was opened, and they received vyākaraṇa to become Buddhas; their minds having become pure, it is therefore said to be like clarified butter. When the practitioner's mind is raw, the teaching is also not yet transformed; when the practitioner's mind is ripe, the teaching ripens accordingly.
