In the perfect teaching there is only one flavor. The Great Sūtra says: 'In the Snowy Mountains there is a grass named forbearance; if cattle eat it, they immediately produce clarified butter.' Being upright and pure, it therefore does not speak of five flavors. If within non-differentiation one makes distinctions, regarding the identity in words up to the ultimate identity, one determines the sequential arising of the five flavors. From the Buddha producing the twelve divisions, that is producing milk, which the new physician uses; it can be judged regarding the four wholesome roots, based on what arises within them, as the five flavors.
