《長阿含．行品》：「佛在圓彌城北尸舍婆村，說四大教者，從佛聞，從和合眾、多比丘聞，從一比丘聞，是名四大教。」《月燈三昧經》第六，明四種修多羅，謂諸行、訶責、煩惱、清淨。

The "Xing pin" (Chapter on Practice) of the Dīrghāgama states: "When the Buddha was in the village of Śiśapā north of the city of Yuamī, he spoke of the four great teachings: hearing from the Buddha, hearing from the harmonious Saṃgha of many monks, hearing from a single monk—these are named the four great teachings." The sixth fascicle of the Candrapradīpa-samādhi-sūtra explains four kinds of sūtras, namely: conditioned formations (saṃskāra), reprimand, afflictions (kleśa), and purity.
