Among those in the bodhisattva-piṭaka, there are those who can awaken suddenly: like the sentient beings for whom sūtras such as the Avataṃsaka were spoken, they do not come by way of the small, but enter the great straightaway; hence it is called 'sudden.' Those who enter gradually are the aforementioned śrāvakas who regressed from the bodhi-mind and are later able to enter the great; since the great comes from the small, it is called 'gradual.' Although there is the difference of sudden and gradual, their locus of receiving the great is one; hence what was spoken for these two persons is the bodhisattva-piṭaka.
