However, teaching must be addressed to persons, and the persons are individually divided into two: within the śrāvaka-piṭaka there are determined śrāvakas and śrāvakas who have regressed from the bodhi-mind; within the bodhisattva-piṭaka there are suddenly awakening great beings and gradually entering bodhisattvas. As for the determined śrāvakas within the śrāvaka-piṭaka, having long practiced distinct good roots, their minds are small, narrow, and inferior; they have achieved a small nature and are exclusively fond of the small. The Buddha preached the small for them, and they ultimately attained realization, unable to proceed to the great. As for the śrāvakas who regressed from the bodhi-mind, these people once generated the bodhi-mind in the presence of past buddhas and bodhisattvas, but passing through birth and death, they forgot their original intention; consequently, a small mind arose, and their aspiration was toward the small. The Buddha preached the small for them, ultimately causing them to proceed to the great. However, while determined śrāvakas dwell exclusively in the small, the śrāvakas who regressed from the bodhi-mind are later able to proceed to the great. Although there is proceeding and remaining, the reception of the small is one; hence what was spoken for these two persons is the śrāvaka-piṭaka.
