Furthermore, regarding the teaching of characteristics before the twelfth year: did one attain the Way through it, or did one not attain the Way? If one attained the Way, this contradicts the *Satyasiddhi-śāstra*. The treatise master says: 'The four noble truths with characteristics are an expedient means to tame the mind; in truth one does not attain the Way thereby; one must see the equality of emptiness before one can attain the Way.' If it is already called 'with characteristics', how could one suddenly attain the Way? If one does not attain the Way, what is the use of this teaching? Furthermore, the five men including Kauṇḍinya initially, in the Buddha's Dharma, were silent without sounds or written words, yet obtained true knowledge and vision. As for this word 'initially', was it not attaining the Way before the twelfth year? Moreover, if they attained the Way, the teaching is identical to the markless; if they did not attain the Way, the teaching is identical to heterodox doctrines. Furthermore, if they attained the Way, what kind of Way did they attain? If they attained the Way by seeing emptiness, this returns to being identical to the markless; if they attained the Way without seeing emptiness, it is also identical to the ninety-five kinds [of heterodox paths] and is not attaining the Buddha's Way. The teaching of characteristics possesses both faults (and so forth).
