First, in terms of the teaching: the teaching of the seven locations and eight assemblies in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra is like 'the rising sun first shining upon the high mountains.' In the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa, it is 'smelling only the campaka flowers.' In the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, it expounds 'the unshared prajñā.' The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Expounding only the unsurpassed Path'; and again: 'When they first saw my body and heard what I expounded, they all immediately believed and accepted it, entering into the Tathāgata's wisdom; if I met sentient beings, I taught them entirely in the Buddha Path.' Chapter Twenty-Seven of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'In the Snowy Mountains there is a grass named forbearance; if cows eat it, they produce the finest ghee.' And again it says: 'When I first attained buddhahood, bodhisattvas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges came to inquire about this meaning, no different from you.' Such meanings and examples in the various Mahāyāna sūtras are all termed the characteristic of the sudden teaching, not the sudden teaching section.
