The Mahāyānasaṃgraha explains the meaning of the ten superior marks, and all claim it to be profound in the extreme, causing the Daśabhūmika masters to switch schools. Now, if we tentatively compare it with the ten subtleties, it has deficiencies. If we take the subtlety of principle to compare with the superior mark of support, clarifying the four propositions of inconceivable conditioned arising to break attachments, how could it leave ālaya or amala as a support? The establishment of the four siddhāntas does not stop at establishing the single proposition of arising from other through ignorance; that [treatise] merely clarifies the meaning along a single path, failing to see the opening and combining of all sūtras as sudden and gradual for the sake of beings, in terms of teachings and practice, following feelings and following wisdom, grandly encompassing the Buddha's transformations and deeply embracing beginning and end. Conditioned arising as a single realm is already broader than support. If we further compare them using the four types of four truths, seven types of two truths, five types of three truths, the single truth, and so forth, it has nothing comparable. In the ten subtleties of the traces, there are already omissions, while the ten subtleties of the origin are absent in all sūtras—how much more so in that treatise! Moreover, the ten subtleties of the contemplation of mind yield immediate practical application, unlike a poor man counting another's jewels. One should know that the teaching approaches of the ten subtleties overlap and accumulate in layers—how can words exhaust them? Even the Great Treatise of India does not belong to this class; why should one bother to speak of the masters of China? This is not boasting; the nature of phenomena is simply so. Reflect and you will see it for yourself; there is no need to waste words.
