Second, citing proof texts: here we only cite the text of the traces, not yet even citing the text of the original source, let alone citing other sūtras. The text says: 'Such characteristics of all phenomena, and so forth, only a buddha and a buddha can exhaust the real mark of all phenomena.' The real mark is the gate of the Buddha's wisdom, and the gate is the object. It also says: 'The extremely profound and subtle Dharma is difficult to see and difficult to understand. Only I and the buddhas of the ten directions are able to know these marks.' This is the subtlety of objects. 'The wisdom I have attained is subtle and foremost.' Moreover, with this subtle wisdom one seeks the unsurpassed path. 'The undefiled, inconceivable, extremely profound and subtle Dharma: only I know these marks' (and so forth). This is the subtlety of wisdom. 'Originally from countless buddhas, fully practising the various paths, having practised these various paths, one attains the fruit at the place of the Way.' It also says: 'Joining palms with reverent mind, desiring to hear the complete path.' Also: 'All phenomena from the beginning are eternally of the character of tranquil cessation; after the Buddha's sons practise the path, in future ages they will become buddhas.' This is the subtlety of practice. 'Heaven rains four flowers' signifies the stages of abiding, practice, dedication, and grounds. 'Open, show, awaken, and enter' also signify stages. 'Riding this jewelled vehicle' and roaming in the four directions: the four directions are the causal stages; 'directly to the place of the Way' is the fruit stage. This is named the subtlety of stages. 'The Buddha himself abides in the Great Vehicle; in accordance with the Dharma he has attained, he is adorned with the power of concentration and wisdom.' The Great Vehicle is the true nature, concentration is that which assists and completes, and wisdom is contemplative illumination; this is the subtlety of the three dharmas. 'For three times seven days, I reflected upon such matters.' Also: 'With the Buddha eye I observed and saw the sentient beings of the six destinies.' Also: 'All sentient beings are my children.' Also: 'Seeing his father from afar, seated on the lion throne.' These are the subtlety of stimulus and response. Now the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, enters samādhi; this is inconceivable, displaying a rare occurrence: the subtlety of spiritual penetrations. The Tathāgata can make various distinctions, skilfully expound the various dharmas, his speech is gentle, pleasing the minds of the multitude. Śāriputra said: 'Hearing the Buddha's gentle voice, deep, far-reaching, and extremely subtle.' Also, the Dharma he expounds all reaches the ground of all-knowledge. Also, he expounds only the unsurpassed path. Also, what has been, is being, and will be expounded is the most difficult to believe and understand. This is the subtlety of expounding the Dharma. 'Teaching only bodhisattvas', having no śrāvaka disciples: this is the subtlety of retinue. 'In the present and future, if they hear a single phrase or a single verse, to all I grant the vyākaraṇa of sambodhi.' Also: 'Those who hear for even an instant immediately attain ultimate sambodhi.' Also: 'If I converted through the Small Vehicle, I would fall into stinginess, and this matter cannot be.' Also: 'In the end, I do not cause a single person to attain extinction alone; I cause all to attain extinction through the Tathāgata's extinction.' This is the subtlety of benefits.
