As for the twelve periods: 'ignorance' is the period of the various past defilements. 'Action' is the period of the various past volitional actions. 'Consciousness' is the period of the mind of continuation and its retinue. 'Name-and-form' is when one has already received rebirth in continuity, but the four kinds of form-faculties have not yet arisen and the six sense bases are not yet complete: first, kalala; second, abbuda; third, pesi; fourth, ghana; fifth, praśākhā. Such periods are named 'name-and-form.' 'Six sense bases' is when the four kinds of form-faculties have already arisen and the six sense bases are complete; when these faculties are not yet able to serve as the basis for contact, this period is named the 'six sense bases.' When these faculties are already able to serve as the basis for contact, but do not yet distinguish suffering and pleasure, cannot avoid harm, grasp fire and touch poison, or take hold of blades and filth, this period is named 'contact.' When one is able to distinguish suffering and pleasure, avoid harm, and so forth, and can give rise to craving but does not give rise to lust, and does not produce defiled attachment to any object, this period is named 'feeling.' When possessing the three feelings mentioned above, this period is named 'craving.' When, on account of craving objects, one seeks in the four directions, this period is named 'grasping.' At the time of seeking, giving rise to body, speech, and mind, this period is named 'existence.' When consciousness, like the present consciousness, is in the future, this period is named 'birth.' When name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling, like those in the present, are in the future, this period is named 'aging and death.'
