Second, regarding numerical progression according to the teachings: if one explains practice through numerical progression in the tripiṭaka [teaching], as in the *Āgama*, the Buddha addressed the monks: 'You should cultivate one practice, and I will bear witness to your attaining the four fruits of a śramaṇa—namely, the mind of non-negligence. If you can protect the practice of the mind of non-negligence, widely expanding and disseminating it, then what was to be done is done, and you will be able to attain nirvāṇa.' He also addressed the monks: 'You should cultivate one practice, namely, not grasping at other things.' A monk said to the Buddha: 'I already know.' The Buddha asked: 'How do you know?' The monk said to the Buddha: 'Other things refers to forms, sounds, scents, tastes, tangible objects, and dharmas.' The Buddha said: 'Excellent! If you can refrain from grasping at these six, then what was to be done is done, and you will be able to attain nirvāṇa.' What is called widely expanding and disseminating means taking the mind of non-negligence and applying it across all dharmas—namely, being non-negligent regarding the three realms and six sense objects, thereby attaining nirvāṇa.
