Regarding explaining practice by increasing to the number two, the *Āgama* says: 'An araṇya monk should cultivate two dharmas as practice: cultivating calm (*śamatha*) and cultivating insight (*vipaśyanā*). When cultivating calm, he can put an end to all evils, and the disciplinary precepts, decorum, and all practices and restraints will not be lost, accomplishing all merits. When cultivating insight, he can contemplate suffering and know it as it really is. Contemplating the suffering, the accumulation of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the escape from suffering, he knows them as they really are, attains the exhaustion of outflows, and does not receive further existence. The Tathāgata also cultivates in this way.'
