然增數明行，為行不同，須判麁妙。若三藏增數諸行，以生滅智導，但期出苦，止息化城，是故為麁。通教增數諸行，體智雖巧，但導出苦，灰斷是同。別教增數諸行，智導則遠，自淺階深，而諸行隔別，事理不融，是故為麁。圓教增數諸行，行融智圓，是故為妙。

However, when explaining practice by progressive enumeration, because the practices differ, one must evaluate them as crude or subtle. If they are the progressive practices of the Tripiṭaka teaching, they are guided by wisdom of arising and ceasing, aim only at escaping suffering, and come to rest in the conjured city; therefore, they are crude. Although the progressive practices of the shared teaching possess skillful embodied wisdom, they only guide one out of suffering, and their ash-like extinction is the same; [therefore, they are crude]. As for the progressive practices of the distinctive teaching, their guidance by wisdom is far-reaching, stepping from shallow to deep, yet the various practices are segregated and disconnected, and phenomenal events and principle are not fused; therefore, they are crude. The progressive practices of the perfect teaching have practices that are fused and wisdom that is all-encompassing; therefore, they are subtle.
