Regarding the distinct ones, the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: 'The five kinds of practice are noble practice, pure practice, divine practice, infant-like practice, and sick practice.' Noble practice has three [aspects]: morality, concentration, and wisdom. As the sūtra says: 'If a bodhisattva hears the Great Nirvāṇa, having heard it, he generates faith and reflects thus: The Buddhas, World-Honoured Ones, have the unexcelled path, have the great correct Dharma, and have the correct practice of the great assembly.' Practice is established from this. 'Hearing the Great Nirvāṇa' is faith in the result, and also faith in cessation. From 'having the unexcelled path' onward is faith in the practice that reveals the result. 'Unexcelled path' is faith in wisdom; 'having the great correct Dharma' is faith in concentration; 'the correct practice of the great assembly' is faith in morality. These are called faith in cause and faith in the path. Lamenting that oneself and all sentient beings break the precepts, commit transgressions, and forfeit the bliss of humans, gods, and nirvāṇa is knowing the origin [of suffering]; wandering in birth and death and receiving retribution in evil destinies is knowing suffering; suffering and its origin conflict with morality, concentration, and wisdom, so there is no path; because there is no path, one does not attain nirvāṇa, and thus there is no cessation.
