Furthermore, clarifying the crude and wonderful in terms of knowing and seeing: what are knowing and seeing? When differentiated, there are four: neither knowing nor seeing; knowing but not seeing; seeing but not knowing; and both knowing and seeing. First, we explain in terms of the tripiṭaka [teaching], and later in terms of the perfect [teaching]; the middle cases can be understood by analogy. Ordinary beings do not hear and therefore do not know; they do not realize and therefore do not see. From the fivefold mind-stilling and four smṛtyupasthānas up to worldly supreme dharmas, because they hear, it is called knowing, but because they have not realized, it is not seeing. Pratyekabuddhas do not hear and therefore do not know, but because they realize spontaneously, it is seeing. The four fruits, because they hear, are also knowing, and because they realize, are also seeing. One by one, their crude and wonderful states can be understood.
