4.130

一、初賢位者，謂學五停心，觀成，破五障道，即是初賢位。所以者何？若定邪聚眾生，不識三寶、四諦，貪染生死。若人歸依三寶，解四真諦，發心欲離生死、求涅槃樂。五種障道，煩惱散動，妨觀四諦。今修五觀成就，障破道明，行解相稱，故名初賢。

1. The stage of the first worthy refers to cultivating the fivefold settling of the mind; when the contemplation is perfected, it destroys the five hindrances to the path, which is the stage of the first worthy. Why is this? If sentient beings of the definitely wrong assembly do not recognize the Three Jewels and the four truths, they greedily crave and are tainted by birth and death. If a person takes refuge in the Three Jewels, understands the four noble truths, and generates the mind seeking to abandon birth and death and seek the bliss of nirvāṇa, the five kinds of hindrances to the path and afflictions are scattered and turbulent, obstructing contemplation of the four truths. Now, cultivating the five contemplations to completion, the hindrances are destroyed and the path becomes clear, with practice and understanding matching each other; hence this is called the first worthy.
