The bodhisattva, with the mind of great nirvāṇa, cultivates holy practice, attains the ground of fearlessness, and fully possesses the boundlessly vast functions of the twenty-five samādhis. At that time, benevolence and compassion are the true pure practice, not the four immeasurables cultivated by other Brahmā devas, nor the benevolence and compassion focused on sentient beings or focused on phenomena of the tripiṭaka or shared teachings. Using the present benevolence, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity to perfume and cultivate all practices, there is nothing that is not accomplished. The Great Sūtra says: 'If someone asks: What is the root of all good dharmas? One should say: Benevolence is.' Since benevolence is the root of practice, it is called pure practice. If spoken according to the perfect [teaching], it is also as the Great Sūtra says: 'Benevolence is the Tathāgata; benevolence is the Buddha-nature.' If benevolence does not possess the Buddha's ten powers, four fearlessnesses, and thirty-two marks, it is śrāvaka benevolence; if it possesses them fully, it is Tathāgata benevolence. This benevolence is the great mass of Dharma; this benevolence is great nirvāṇa. The power of benevolence is vast and deep, fully possessing all adornments of merit; therefore it is called pure practice.
