4.91

圓五行者，《大經》云：「復有一行是如來行，所謂大乘、大般涅槃。」此大乘是圓因；涅槃是圓果。舉此標如來行，非餘六度、通、別等行。前雖名大乘，不能圓運；前雖名涅槃，過茶可說，乃是菩薩之行，不得名為如來一行。

Regarding the perfect five practices, the Great Sūtra states: 'There is further one practice that is the Tathāgata's practice, namely the Great Vehicle and the Great Parinirvāṇa.' This Great Vehicle is the perfect cause; nirvāṇa is the perfect fruit. Citing this identifies the Tathāgata's practice, not the other practices such as the six perfections, the shared, or the distinctive teachings. Although the former were called the Great Vehicle, they cannot convey all comprehensively; although the former were called nirvāṇa, having gone beyond milk they may be spoken of, yet they are merely the practices of bodhisattvas and cannot be called the Tathāgata's one practice.
