First, analogously penetrating the three paths: the track of the real nature is the path of suffering; the track of contemplative illumination is the path of afflictions; the track of cultivating support is the path of karma. As for the path of suffering being the real nature, the text below says: 'The worldly marks abide eternally'—is not that very birth and death the dharma-kāya? Affliction is contemplative illumination: contemplative illumination originally illuminates delusion; without delusion there would be no illumination, which is 'all dharmas are empty.' The text says: 'From the beginning, all dharmas are constantly of the mark of quiescence'—this is affliction being contemplative illumination. Illumination is like firewood generating fire. The text says: 'Among the past buddhas, if any heard a single verse, they have all already accomplished the Buddha Way.' It also says: 'Deeply penetrating the marks of sin and blessing, universally illuminating the ten directions.' This is hearing the subtle verse that embodies and penetrates afflictions. As for cultivating support being the path of karma: evil supports good; without evil, there is also no good. The text says: 'Evil demons enter their minds, reviling and insulting me; because we remember the Buddha, we will endure all these things.' If evil does not come upon one, one cannot employ mindfulness; employing mindfulness is due to the infliction of evil, and so forth. Furthermore, the assembly attached to dharmas in the time of King of Awesome Sound Buddha, hearing the words of Sadāparibhūta, reviled and struck him; because of that evil karma, they met Sadāparibhūta again, were taught and converted by Sadāparibhūta, and all attained non-retrogression. Moreover, Devadatta was a good friend; is this not evil as cultivating support? The three tracks are the three paths: this is the nature of principle, practicing non-paths and penetrating the Buddha path. At the five grades, practicing contemplation is practicing non-paths and penetrating the Buddha path. At the purification of the six sense faculties, it is the semblance practice of non-paths and penetrating the Buddha path. From the ten abodes onward, it is partially real practice of non-paths and penetrating the Buddha path. At subtle awakening, it is ultimate practice of non-paths and penetrating the Buddha path, and so forth.
