Sixth, analogously penetrating the three dharmas: previously, by means of the dharma of the three tracks from beginning to end, there was vertical penetration without obstruction. Now, wishing to horizontally penetrate all dharmas so that all are unobstructed, we analogously penetrate the various threefold dharmas. Why? While names differ according to conditions, the meaning attained is identical; roughly penetrating ten categories, the remainder may be understood: the three paths, the three consciousnesses, the three Buddha-natures, the three prajñās, the three bodhis, the three great vehicles, the three bodies, the three nirvāṇas, the three jewels, and the three virtues. The threefold dharmas are immeasurable; we only employ ten to present the great essentials and clarify the beginning and end. Transmigration in the three paths is the fundamental dharma of birth and death, and therefore comes first. If one wishes to go against the stream of birth and death, one must understand the three consciousnesses, know the three Buddha-natures, give rise to the three wisdoms, generate the three bodhicittas, practice the three great vehicles, realize the three bodies, accomplish the three nirvāṇas, become the three jewels, benefit all beings, and when the conditions for conversion are exhausted, enter the three virtues and abide in the secret treasury, and so forth.
