At the stage of the ten faiths, the path of subduing becomes ever stronger. Producing similitude understanding, one destroys the view and thought [afflictions] within the realm, as well as the dust-sand ignorance within and outside the realm. As the sūtra text says, “attaining the three dhāraṇīs,” this is only called the path of similitude, not yet the true path. The revolving dhāraṇī is turning from the provisional and entering the true. The hundred-thousand revolving dhāraṇīs is turning from the true and entering the conventional. The skillful means of the sound of Dharma is precisely the path of subduing, having not yet entered the Middle. As in the Yingluo jing, contemplating the entry into emptiness from the provisional, though severing view and thought, merely departs from falsity and is called liberation; in reality, one has not yet attained all liberation. One should know that although the six senses are purified, the four wholesome roots of heat and summit in the perfect teaching, as well as compliant patience, are merely the stages of the path of subduing.
