Explaining the names of the teachings has already been stated above under the arising of the teachings. Now, the names indicated differ among one another, and their translations vary greatly. Here, relying on the *Dazhidulun* to indicate their names: First, *sūtra*, called here 'root of the Dharma', also called 'concordant scripture', or 'thread scripture'. Second, *geya*, called here 'recapitulative verse', using verse to chant the sūtras. Third, *vyākaraṇa*, called here 'prophecy'. Fourth, *gāthā*, called here 'non-recapitulative verse', also simply called 'verse'. Four lines constitute a stanza, like the poems and odes in this land. Fifth, *udāna*, called here 'unprompted discourse'. Sixth, *nidāna*, called here 'causal conditions'. Seventh, *avadāna*, called here 'parable'. Eighth, *ityuktaka*, called here 'thus-spoken', or 'former occurrences'. Ninth, *jātaka*, called here 'birth story'. Tenth, *vaipulya*, called here 'correct and expansive'. Eleventh, *adbhutadharma*, called here 'unprecedented'. Twelfth, *upadeśa*, called here 'expository treatise'.
