6.121

一者、就隱、顯共論四教：隱即祕密教，顯即頓、漸、不定教。祕密既隱，非世流布，此置而不論。若對四法界眾生，通說十二部，別說或九部、或十一部，名漸法說也。若對兩法界眾生，通說十二部，此說頓法也。或對四法界，或對兩法界，或作別說、或但通說，此說不定法也。

First, discussing the four teachings jointly in terms of the concealed and the manifest: The concealed is the secret teaching; the manifest consists of the sudden, gradual, and indeterminate teachings. Since the secret is concealed, it is not circulated in the world; this is set aside and not discussed. If in response to the sentient beings of the four dharma realms one generally speaks of the twelve divisions, and specifically speaks of either nine divisions or eleven divisions, this is named preaching the gradual Dharma. If in response to the sentient beings of the two dharma realms one generally speaks of the twelve divisions, this is preaching the sudden Dharma. If either in response to the four dharma realms or the two dharma realms, one either gives a specific exposition or merely a general exposition, this is preaching the indeterminate Dharma.
