Second, directly taking the gradual teaching among the manifest to further explain the four teachings: these are the tripiṭaka, shared, distinctive, and perfect teachings. The tripiṭaka teaching directly addresses three dharma realms, specifically explaining either nine or eleven [genres]. The shared teaching addresses four dharma realms, universally explaining the twelve genres of teachings. The distinctive teaching addresses two dharma realms, universally explaining the twelve genres of teachings. The perfect teaching addresses one dharma realm, universally explaining the twelve genres of teachings. Previously, [it was explained that] using morally neutral transforming dhyāna in conjunction with various forms of compassion, [the Buddha] manifests the wheel of the body: appearing as a national preceptor, a Daoist master, the leader of Confucian scholars, a parent, a sibling, or even a monkey, deer, or horse, benefiting them through shared activities beyond description. Now, regarding what is expounded by the wheel of the mouth, it is like the previous use of various forms of compassion perfuming the morally neutral transforming dhyāna; being of diverse kinds, the hundreds of thousands of teachings are ineffable. Because they are ineffable, though filled to capacity in dragon palaces or on elephant backs, though oceans were used as ink or mountains ground to inksticks, the eighty-four thousand dharma treasures could never be exhausted. Although indeed without boundary, when subsumed under the twelve genres, none is left uncollected.
