Fourth, clarifying what is signified: if discussing the meaning in full detail, it appears in the *Significance of the Four Teachings*; here we briefly adduce the signified meaning. If expounding the vehicle of humans and devas, it signifies the conceivable conventional [truth] within the realms, never signifying the real. If, for the sake of followers of the gradual teaching, one specifically expounds nine or eleven genres, or even universally expounds twelve genres: in the beginning, it primarily signifies the conceivable conventional truth and secondarily signifies the conceivable real truth; in the middle, it primarily signifies the conceivable real truth and secondarily signifies the conceivable conventional truth; at the end, it primarily signifies the inconceivable real truth and secondarily signifies the inconceivable conventional truth; and further, it dual-signifies both the inconceivable real and conventional truths (and so on). If expounding the sudden twelve genres, it primarily signifies the inconceivable real and secondarily signifies the inconceivable conventional. If expounding the indeterminate, then what is signified cannot be determinately classified.
