First, regarding subtlety in terms of principle: among all dharmas, there is none that is not the Middle Way, and liberation is not expounded apart from written words. The nature of written words being transcendent is itself liberation; everything that is expounded is subtle by being identical with principle. For example, when a dragon sends down rain, it differs from place to place, sometimes being water, sometimes fire, or sometimes swords and staves. Principle is also like this: principle is complete, but sentiments may be contrary or conformable to it; because contrary, it is crude, and by conforming to principle, it is subtle.
