Third, regarding what is signified: if expounding the vehicle of humans and devas for beings of the six destinies, this signifies the conditioned, and both the signifier and the signified are crude. If expounding the principle of the Four Noble Truths of arising and ceasing through the five gates of the tripiṭaka for those of dull faculties, then both the signifier and the signified are crude. If the five gates of embodying phenomena in the shared teaching are compared to the gate of analytical reduction in the tripiṭaka, although the signifier of the gate of embodying is skillful, what is signified is still the real truth, so what is signified is also crude. In the five gates of the distinctive teaching, the signifier is crude, but what is signified, the Middle Way, is subtle. In the five gates of the perfect teaching, both the signifier and the signified are subtle.
