6.169

所謂結緣妙、成熟妙、業生妙、願生妙、應生妙、內眷屬妙、外眷屬妙，能受妙道、影響妙事，是故稱妙。若將此意，約五味者：乳教，有別、圓兩眷屬，一麁一妙；酪教，但一麁；生蘇，三麁一妙；熟蘇，二麁一妙；法華，無麁但妙。是名相待明眷屬妙也。

What are called subtlety of forming affinities, subtlety of maturation, subtlety of birth through karma, subtlety of birth through vows, subtlety of birth in response, subtlety of the internal retinue, and subtlety of the external retinue, being able to receive the subtle Path and resonate with subtle activities—for these reasons it is called subtle. If one applies this meaning to the five flavors: the milk teaching has two retinues, distinctive and perfect, one crude and one subtle; the curd teaching has only one crude; the raw curd has three crude and one subtle; the cooked curd has two crude and one subtle; the Lotus has no crude, only the subtle. This is called clarifying the subtlety of the retinue through relative contrast.
