Regarding the retinue of the mind of craving: ignorance is the father, and foolish craving is the mother, giving birth to the descendants of defilement. Through covetous clinging and conceptualizing, desiring to attain Dharma-gates within the mind, demonic apparitions then enter. Just as when thinking of an enchanting woman, perverse bewitchment enchants one; the practitioner is also like this: when conceptualization is biased and perverse, perverse entities find entry. Due to the power of ghosts, they may generate provisional understanding or real understanding. Because perverse understanding arises, a ghostly guide arises, generating ghostly loving-kindness, clinging to perverse joy in the Dharma, practicing perverse six perfections and factors of the Path, and gaining perverse eloquence; with sharp minds and eloquent tongues, they preach various Dharma-gates—this is the retinue of the mind of craving. When the perverse characteristics are sharp, they give rise to the four views; the mind of views calculates and delineates, fabricating various Dharma-gates. What is viewed by one's own mind is taken as real, and agreeing with others is taken as provisional. When the mind gives rise to craving, it is the daughter; when the mind discriminates, it is the son. Cultivating the six perfections as factors of the Path within such a mind is called the retinue of the mind of views. Why? These views and cravings do not recognize the suffering and origination of their own minds, but falsely call them the Path and cessation! Not knowing words from non-words, like an insect gnawing on wood that accidentally forms the name of a Dharma-gate, there is name without reality—is this not craving and views? If one can contemplate the mind, recognizing that the minds of craving and views are all conditioned dharmas that are impermanent, arising and ceasing, then there are four sets of retinues of mind contemplation. As the verse of the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā states: 'Dharmas born through causes and conditions are identical with emptiness, identical with the provisional, and identical with the middle.' Accordingly, under the four contemplations, the retinues are individually explained, which can be known by analogy with the above.
