If one is stingy, greedy, and flatteringly obsequious, aiming for fame, lacking real virtue within while wanting people to praise oneself, when this evil arises, the precepts are suppressed, and one falls among the ghosts. If one lacks shame and conscience, defaults on debts without repaying, lacks reverence, is arrogant and wrathful, greedy and gluttonous, when this evil arises, the precepts are suppressed, and one falls into the animal destiny. If one is envious of the worthy and jealous of the capable, cultivating meritorious power merely to surpass others, harboring a malicious mind like poisonous maggots, contriving means to trap and terrify others, when this evil arises, the precepts are suppressed, and one falls into the karma of asuras. If one wishes to abandon these three evil minds and accomplish precepts and goodness, when goodness has a capacity that can be stimulated when conditions are fitting, the sagely function responds accordingly. The evil mind is decisively shattered, precepts and goodness are fully perfected—this is called the destruction of the causes of the four destinies and the completion of the causes of humans and gods, obtaining both hidden and manifest benefits. This explanation is made with reference to cultivating causes in the human destiny.
