If one lacks precepts for self-restraint and gives rein to one's body and speech, committing the karma of the four destinies, one is called a person of hell. If one abandons evil and upholds precepts, one is called a person who sees heaven. Yet if the restrictive precepts are rigorous and one wavers and regresses upon encountering conditions, then evil karma arises again. Or if committing the four grave offenses or the five heinous crimes, burning down and destroying stupas and monasteries, when this mind arises, evil surges and precepts disappear; when this karma ripens and is completed, one must fall into the evil destinies. If one wishes to be free of this mind and accomplish precepts and goodness, here there is a capacity of wholesome roots that can be stimulated when conditions are fitting, stimulating the Stainless Samādhi to respond accordingly. The evil mind is decisively shattered, the cause of hell ceases, and one obtains both hidden and manifest benefits (and so on). If people today enter the sanctuary to repent, yet their evil minds do not turn, then evil karma is not destroyed. If evil karma is not destroyed, the fettering rope is not severed, and sins cannot be eliminated.
