6.219

若麁、妙機，若別、圓應，若淨、穢土，若淺、深益，不出十番，包括法界，利益略周，大意可見，不俟繁文。是為大通佛所，毒鼓損生，聞有遠近，死有奢促；天鼓增道，聞有遠近。故令益有深、淺，致有業通願，應諸眷屬利益也。

Whether coarse or subtle capacities, whether distinctive or perfect responses, whether pure or defiled lands, whether shallow or deep benefits—they do not go beyond these ten turns, which embrace the dharma realm. The benefits being summarily complete, the general meaning may be seen without relying on redundant text. Thus it was that at the place of the Buddha Great Penetrating Wisdom (Mahābhijñā-jñānābhibhū), when the poison drum damaged life, there was distance or proximity in hearing it, and tardiness or rapidity in dying; when the heavenly drum augmented the Path, there was distance or proximity in hearing it. Therefore, this caused the benefits to be deep or shallow, resulting in the retinue receiving the benefits of response through [past] karma, supernormal powers, and vows.
