Section 8: The subtlety of preaching the Dharma. All phenomena cannot be demonstrated; the characteristics of words are quiescent and extinguished. Yet due to causes and conditions, they can also be expounded and demonstrated. Previously, the two bodies—the medicine and the wish-granting jewel—first moved [beings] through concentration; now, the two drums—the poisoned drum and the celestial drum—afterward uproot [defilements] through wisdom, expounding the eka-yāna without the three distinctions, all arriving at the ground of all-knowledge. The Dharma thus preached is completely real and not false, and for this reason the subtlety of preaching the Dharma follows next. It contains six points: 1. Explaining the names of the teachings. 2. Distinguishing the Great and Small [Vehicles]. 3. Sameness and difference regarding conditions. 4. Classifying what is expressed. 5. Clarifying the crude and the subtle. 6. Clarifying the contemplation of mind.
